Flamenco takes priority on the provincial cultural agenda, with events of the importance of the National Flamenco Art Contest, held every three in Novembre since 1956. Organised by the Grand Theatre Municipal Public Foundation of Cordoba, the long list of famous names who have won the award are an indication of how important the contest is: Fosforito, José Menese, Paco de Lucía, Serranito, El Lebrijano, and Manolo Sanlúcar, to name only a few.
The list of popular music includes the Flamenco in the Taverns Itinerary (January and April), the Three Cultures Music Season (April), the Long White Night of Flamenco (June), and the National Copla Competition (November).
Flamenco is a distinguishing characteristic of Cordoba, and many establishments stage flamenco shows, where the best names in flamenco singers, guitarists and dancers thrill their audiences every night.
Many towns in the province boast great flamenco clubs of long tradition, including Bujalance, Montalbán, Fernán Núñez and Palma del Río, where the very essence of flamenco can be found.
