During the period of al-Andalus, Córdoba was referred to as the city of the seven gates.
The Puerta de Almodóvar opened onto the Jewish quarter and was originally called Bab al Chawz or gate of the walnut tree.
Of Moorish origin and constructed in the 14th century, the Puerta is the only surviving example of the large gateways that surrounded the city in the medieval period.
