Synagogue

The synagogue is a unique exponent in Andalusia, a vestige of the history of the Jewish people in the Iberian Peninsula.

Located on calle Judíos just a few metres from the Plazuela de Tiberiades where the monument to Maimónides stands, the synagogue, steeped in a rich history, is one of the most appealing temples in the world.

The temple was erected in 1315, or in 5075 according to the Jewish calendar. Boasting a Mudejar style, as with all synagogues, it is not entered directly from the street, but rather via a small patio.

The synagogue has two rooms: a small atrium and main prayer room. All of the walls are decorated with rich plasterwork that characterises the Mudejar art of this period and the east wall has an opening for the tabernacle where the Pentateuch or Jewish Law scrolls were kept.
