Adamuz

The village is situated on a terrace overlooking the Guadalquivir and surrounded by the landscape of the Sierra Morena. The village arose as a way-point for those travelling between Córdoba and Toledo via the old Camino de la Plata, and maintains the tradition of providing accommodation, which is even reflected in the name of the main street: Mesones [inns]. The reddish stone, piedra molinaza, represents a decorative element in the architecture of the village, which overlooks a terrace of the Guadalquivir and which is surrounded by the vast northern sierra, with its rugged terrain and numerous hunting grounds.

  • The village is located in the east of the province, at the foot of the Sierra Morena, 13 km from Pedro Abad.
  • Distance from Córdoba: 46 km.
  • Altitude: 240 m.
  • Surface area: 334 km2 .
  • Population: 4476.
  • Term used to designate inhabitants: Adamuceños.
  • Region in which the municipality is located: Alto Guadalquivir.

Adamuz must have existed during the period of Moorish occupation as its name derives from the Arabic damus, which means cave.  Lying next to the old Camino de la Plata [silver route], the village possessed inns and hostelries to provide lodging to travellers.
